Boston 2009: Friday!

Continuing my blog post from last night, because it’s entirely too much for one post (in my opinion at any rate), I will now break down how awesome Friday wound up being.  I can’t guarantee a story rife with political intrigue, twists at every corner, or action-packed excitement (… man.  I need to live in a movie.)  but a blog post I can guarantee!

Friday started off with my uncle waking up crazy early.   By crazy early, I mean before the sun came up.  I got up several hours later and was a better person for it.  5 AM is an unwelcome stranger to me.  Had a cheerless breakfast at the hotel lobby, and set off to the bus.  The hour long bus ride into the city went by pretty quickly.  I bummed around South Station (which is a pretty central hub for all things boston.   Tons of trains and buses link up to the station and you can go just about anywhere from there).  for about half an hour while I waited for Ian’s train to get in.

Ian finally arrives, and we head out on our epic journey of the city of Boston.  He takes me down a bit of the financial district, shows me where he used to work, and a bunch of other interesting sites, all the while telling me a bit of the history of Boston.  We break for food at the Elephant and Castle (link) Pub and Restaurant (Photo op!).  This will be my first authentic bit of Bostonian food.  Ian (photo) gets a shepherd’s pie, and a Black and Tan.  I opted for a Blue Moon, a Hot Turkey Sandwich and some traditional New England Clam Chowder.  Good gods, that stuff is DELICIOUS.  I thought I was a fan of Clam Chowder before..but now that I’ve had the real thing, I can never go back.

So my drink comes.. and I’m expecting like..a mug, or a bottle.. Newp!  They bring me a pint of Blue Moon, served in a Wheat beer glass.  Fancy indeed!   The turkey sandwich was NOT what I was expecting, either.   What is before me, is a slab of french bread with a bunch of turkey on top.  The turkey has  been slathered with delicious turkey gravy, and a bunch of cranberry sauce is on the side.. presumably to put on top.

Normally, a sandwich has two slices of bread.  I mention this to my buddy, who casually remarks: “What?  It’s got bread!”  I shrug, and eat.  It’s deliciousness incarnate.  We finish our meal and strike off for the city.  Ian takes me through a bit more of the Financial district, where I see one crazy-fancy Wendy’s (photo).   We walk through china town on our way to.. The Garment District.  The plan is to walk there, then take the train to see more of Boston.

Well..  Part of the plan worked!  We walked and walked and walked and saw a bunch of Boston. (Photos: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)  Halfway there, Ian’s GPS decides to stop working.  We’re in the middle of Boston, near the Boston Medical Center, so we hightail it to the nearest Train station and take the train to.. MIT! (photo)  (Quick shot of Slappy while the GPS adjusts).

At last, we’re on our way to the Garment District.  The Garment District was recommended to me as just something to see while in Boston.  What it really is, is a costume store with a large “used clothing” section. (1, 2, 3)  They sell the used clothing for a dollar per pound of clothes.  Not a bad deal if you can find something worth wearing, I suppose.  When we arrived, there were several people rooting through the clothing pile.  Nobody really checked out the boots and shoes much..but that’s okay.  I got some great photos of the place.

Still, it was fun to just show up and try on a few things.  (photos! 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)  Oh.  Right.  BATMAN MASK!  I wound up picking up the batman mask because it was awesome.  It was also like.. 6 dollars.

After that, we putz around the MIT store (The Coop) and pick up a few books..and souvenirs.  I selected a magnet that says “NERD PRIDE!”  and an MIT notebook for my roommate, because it’s his birthday.  I also bought a buddy for Slappy.  It’s a little giraffe named Mit.  His name is Mit because it’s on his shirt.  (Pictured later).

We picked up a quick drink and a slice of pizza, and headed to one of the rooftop gardens.  I really like the idea of sticking a garden on top of a building.  Not only does it provide something neat to see, but it also replenishes the fresh-air supply in the city at the same time!  (I have video, but I’ll have to post it up later.)

We did s’more walking and sight-seeing (1, 2, 3, 4)… but it quickly became apparent that my fat-ass wasn’t going to be able to keep up with the pace for too much longer.  We hop on the train and head out to foods.  By the time we get to the Sunset Grill and Pub, the sun had gone down.  The place was filled to capacity, so Ian (photo) and I (photo) had to wait outside.  It was a short wait though.  The place is HUGE.  multiple levels, a bar with it’s own twitter feed (from the looks of it, at any rate), and 112 different beers on tap.  ON TAP (photo).  We were served by this awesome waitress, whose name escapes me at the moment.  Perhaps Ian can fill that in later.

At this time, I decided to try something I’d heard from a buddy of mine.  “Hey, would you mind posing for a picture with my friend?”  and out comes Slappy!  She accepts, and sadly, our fearless hero (me) forgot to turn off the flash.  So I sit there taking the picture and smiling.. she asks “Did it take?”  then BAM!  Flash to the face. I felt so bad, but the picture turned out EPIC.  I was very pleased with the food and service, so I was sure to leave a good tip.

We made it back to South Station in time for me to catch the last bus outta there.  I then went home and crashed.  I was tiiiired.

Boston, 2009: Thursday!

Oct 19 2009

Thursday started out wonderfully.  I couldn’t sleep the night before, so I stayed up watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (link). Holy crap that movie is crazy.   Let’s not spend too long on it though, since I have to go through an entire vacation tonight. :D

I wake up a little after 7, brush my teeth and finish up a few last things for my trip.  I’ve got my bags packed, my itinerary, my tickets for the bus to Atlanta..  I’m all set.  I head out the door and put on some good waking up music for the quick drive to the bus station.  Nothing on the radio, of course..  Switch to NPR, for some news at least.

So I pull up to the station and I remember “I’m going to Boston…  It’s probably going to be pretty freakin’ cold.  I didn’t pack my big warm new jacket.   This trip is gonna SUUUUUCK.”   But it’s okay!  Tucked away in my trunk is my ratty, four or five year old leather jacket.  It’s falling apart, it doesn’t look too elegant..  It’s warm.  Quite warm.  sometimes, uncomfortably so.  I plop that into my bag, and I’m off to the bus.

Bus ride was uneventful.  I got through security with absolutely no trouble. (This will be important later.)   I’m at the airport and through security a good 90 minutes before my flight leaves.  Plenty of time to see the airport..get to my gate..then explore breakfast options!  After half an hour of exploring and looking for something healthy, I determine that the breakfast options are pretty horrid, and I go for tasty.

Charley’s Subs (photo).  Decent food, decently priced (even for airport food).  I’m proud of myself, too.  I didn’t even eat all my french fries.  I hardly touched them, to be honest.   After I ate, I took my first picture with Slappy (photo).  (Oh gods, I look terrible in this picture.  That’s what I get for going with a low-angle shot.  Yes yes, I’m fat.  I’m exercising regularly, get over it.)  Slappy is a beanie baby squirrel I picked up.. hell, I don’t know when or where, but at some point I picked him up.  I’m bringing Slappy along for the ride, as an excuse to take more pictures.  It worked, I should add. :D

Breakfast accomplished, I return to my MP3 player and play some Tecmo Bowl: Kickoff.  TB:K is a DS game that is a remake of an old NES Tecmo Bowl game.  This is pretty much the best football game of all time.  I’m listening to a bunch of Terry Pratchett novels.  Currently, I’m listening to Men At Arms, the second in the series of Ankh-Morpork city guards.  Good books, but perhaps for another blog post.   Back to the trip, ya?  I board the plane, it’s uneventful.. I take some snapshots (photo 1, 2) when we get closer to Boston.   Oh, along the way.. I was told I could look out of the left side of the plane and see New York City.  I’ve got a window seat.   I’m also on the right side of the plane.  :(

So I arrive in Boston, pick up my suitcase..which is suddenly missing the WHEELS.  The one thing that made this suitcase awesome is that it had wheels and I could just drag it behind me when I needed to.  The WHEELS CAME OFF.  Not just like.. on their own.  They came off between Atlanta and Boston.  I will need to replace it at somepoint.  Maybe later.  My mom, uncle Bob, and Aunt Mary (Marie?) pick me up in a white rental car, and we’re on our way to the Hotel.   We’re staying at the Residence Inn (link), in Nashua.  It’s cool, ’cause the rooms were HUGE and had an upstairs.  Pretty classy place.  The wifi wasn’t too great, but that’s alright.

On the way to the hotel, we pop into a place called Giorgio’s Ristorante! (link).  It’s a little italian and mediterranean place.  The food was pretty good, all things considered.  Might not eat there again though.  The bread was delicious, and the pesto sauce they brought out for it..   Man… I could fill up on the bread.   I didn’t though.  I wound up having this:  Papa Alex’s Red Wine Braised Lamb Shank (photo).  They describe it as: Slow-cooked with fresh herbs, Roma tomatoes and vegetables, served with mushroom-parmesean risotto, the natural braising sauce, crispy fried parsnips and refreshing lemon gremolata.  I describe it as:  A mishmash of hearty food with a giant bone in the middle.  You are what you eat, I suppose.  *badum.*

After dinner, we head to the hotel and get to know each other better.  After all, this is family!  I met my aunt before, but not my uncle.  He told story after story after story… after story after story after story… repeat ad nauseum.  It was interesting at first, but as the night wore on, his stories got more and more… inappropriate and frankly, kinda disturbing.  Ah well.  Can’t pick your family.  Here’s the photos.  Bob: 1 Mom: 1, 2 Marie (Mary?): 1 Slappy: 1, 2.

This concludes thursday!  I got plenty of sleep, which is good.  ’cause Tomorrow I went to see the city of Boston with one Ian Underwood.  It was AWESOME.  The end!

So much to Celebrate

celebrate

Last night, I had a rack of lamb for dinner.  Why, you might ask.  I know I would.  Lamb is expensive.  Welp, allow me to enlighten you!  A bunch of us got promotions at work.  I’m one of them.  :D   I’m super excited!  You have no idea.

I’m a bit nervous, like I always am when I start something new.  What if I fail?  What if I’m not good enough?  These questions plague me.  But the good news is that my smarter half of me throws it’s weight around and reminds me that I got here on my own merits, and if my managers didn’t think I could do it, I wouldn’t have been offered the position.  BOOYA!

I start tomorrow.  Holy crap, I’m so excited!  Knowing that you do something good enough to be recognized for what you do, and advance to a better position is just an awesome feeling.

Also: I have a tan.  I dunno where it came from, but I have one.  Must be all that time I’m spending out in the sun.  The evil day star.  My nemesis.

I went tubing down the Ocmulgee river about a month and a half ago, followed by a delicious barbecue cookout for the 4th of July (which was EPIC and awesome and full of win.  I cooked. :D )  Oh, and I went Jet-skiing last weekend.  SO MUCH FUN!

My dad invited us out, so my roommate and I decided to take him up on his offer.  My roommate has never been jet-skiing, so it was a real treat for him.  I haven’t been in so long, it might as well have been my first time.

There is nothing like the feeling of going 55 MPH over a lake, hitting some crazy-good air, and having a blast.  We also had a tube hooked up, and went jet-skiing with a guy in the tube.   DUDE.  I lost my sunglasses and I didn’t even care.  I had so much fun!

We wound up going around the lake a few times, just seeing how far it went and what we could see.  Scott was piloting (driving? Steering?) while I made sure the back of the boat stayed firmly in the water. :D    He found this relatively huge wave (probably a foot and a half.  Not much if you’re surfing, but when you’re in a Jet ski on the lake?  It was hueg. H U E G.)  He gunned it and we hit it at just the right angle to go flying!

Just when I thought nothing could top that,  he flipped it around and we hit it again.  Then we hit it a third time for good measure.  Four hours out on the lake was enough to tire me out and leave my arms tired and sore the rest of the week.

It was a good hurt though.  Hanging on to the tube while careening down the lake doing donuts.  Definitely good times.

One last thing: The VNV Nation concert was awesome, that’s all I have to say.

Why I should be in a dour mood

but oddly, I’m not.   I’m going to Tarantino this blog post, so look out!

So, I’m sitting here on the couch in my living room.  My arms hurt, the muscles are pulled, strained, and pushed beyond their limits.  It hurts to stand, it hurts to do anything other than sit and be immobile.  There’s a musty smell in the air, and the audible hum of a large fan blowing.  I have a pile of clothes on the small ‘man-couch’ in my bedroom.  This represents my clothes for the week.

A week or two ago, Erin asks if I’d be willing to help her dad move into a new house.  Since her dad is also my bossly boss, who am I to refuse?   It’s no big deal.  Moving is good for ya.  Builds character.  It also builds bruises. :P

Earlier this week, I’m informed that the moving day (Saturday) will begin at 8:30 in the morning.  Gods, this is going to SUCK.  Not that anyone can’t do the math, but 8:30 in Geek-Time is like 4 AM for the average human.  It’s just not done!  …  So I get up, grab some foodage, and make my way over to B33J’s house a little after 8:30.  People are running late all over the place, so we wind up getting to the house at 9.

Not including the multitude of piddly shit that was left un-packed when we get there, the task of moving the furniture is still quite daunting.   Lots of big furniture, STURDY wooden furniture, a huge TV, and a large projection screen TV as well, but that was cake.  I’ll spare the minutiae and just say that there was quite a bit of furniture for three guys to move.

That still aggravates me.  There was supposed to be a crew of people to move the furniture, but everyone backed out.  Of course they did.  It’s not as though they’d given their word or anything.  Nope.  *sigh*  No soapbox commentary about the state of honor and integrity in the modern age.

… Ten hours later, we call it quits for the day, and agree to resume tomorrow.  We got a pretty good chunk done the first day, leaving a few rooms, a refrigerator (…*wimper*) and a Tool shed full of stuff.  Sunday approaches.  I can barely move.  My arms will not fully straighten, it hurts to walk.

I contemplate sleeping in and not helping.  I’m eventually coerced into returning.  Partially because of Erin, and partially because I know how screwed they’d be if I didn’t show up.  I walk over to my closet to pull something out, and am greeted by the ever-dreadful SQUISH of a wet carpet.  This can mean only two things.  The recent rainfall leaked into the closet (not likely)  or the AC unit / Water Heater is leaking.  Again.  On my way out the door, I do a quick check of the side-room and sure enough, the Water Heater is leaking.  Office is closed and maintenance doesn’t work on Sunday.  Wonderful.

Cheerless breakfast of donuts and Bawls (I LOVE G33K B33R.) leads to another late start.

B33J and I two-man the fridge.  What a fiasco that was.  It was too large to go out the back door, then it was too heavy to be forced out the front.  We had to make a cardboard ramp to get it out the door.  Then, we had to reverse the truck, so that the ramp isn’t doubly sloped uphill.  (Downhill driveway,  big ramp.. not fun.)  So I’m standing there holding the fridge on a hand-cart thing, while B33J pulls the truck around.  Finally, we get it into the truck.  The whole thing must have taken a good 10 minutes.  Good thing I’m sturdy!

We get a bunch of miscellaneous crap packed in, pop the truck over to the new house, unload it and break for food before tackling the last few pieces in the truck and going back for more.  Right after foods, Alex comes to help! (Hurray, fresh bodies!)  By this point, I’m nearly spent.   We got most of the house moved out, all that is left is piddly stuff in the garage, and tool shed.

Sunday night, I’m on my last legs.  I don’t want to do anything but sit and stare.  The water has flooded all the way to my computer chair.  This isn’t going to be good.   First thing monday morning, I walk over and let maintenance know.  We get the flooded area cleared out, they suck up as much of the water as they can, and I’m left to my own devices with a massive fan blowing underneath the carpet in order to dry it more efficiently.
